Getting Started
January 18, 2009
I just bought my first sewing machine from amazon.com. It is a very basic sewing machine called the Brother LS-2125. It is supposed to arrive this week.
I also enrolled in sewing classes at Joann Fabrics in Sherman Oaks. The class is four weeks long and meets once a week. The class requirement is that you purchase a sewing starter kit which includes items like, measuring tape, pin cushion, shearing scissors, dress maker pins, seam zipper, needles, tailors chalk …To name a few. I also had to purchase fabric and a pattern. So far between the cost of the sewing machine, class and supplies -I have invested apprx. $280. Who knew sewing could be so expensive. I had no idea that fabric was so pricey. I guess I finally get why my mom used to turn my Bambi sheets into PJ’s when I was a kid.
Here’s a tip I learned about new fabric: Always wash the material you buy before you sew it and to avoid the colors in the fabric from bleeding in the washing machine process-add a half a cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle.
Off to wash my fabric…
